About the Film: Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece and the ‘mother’ of future slasher films never ages – the scary house with the mother who just ‘goes a little crazy sometimes’, the 40000 dollars, Bernard Herrman’s screeching violin score, the amazing Saul Bass titles elevate this masterful character study filled with suspense and terror.

BLACK COAL THIN ICE (2014) – Chinese with English subtitles

Director: Diao Yinan

Cast: Liao Fan, Gwei Lun-Mei

Runtime: 1 hr 50 mins

About the Film: This under-rated winner of the Golden Bear at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival can be described as the Chinese "Seven" (the masterful David Fincher serial killer classic).  It follows a morally bankrupt, disgraced cop as he tracks down a brutal serial killer over the course of a decade. Violent, repugnant yet deeply moving, the film is also a critique of economic disparity in Chinese society.
