Film: The Big Sleep (1946)

Directed by: Howard Hawks

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Martha Vickers, Dorothy Malone, Elisha Cook Jr.

Run-Time: 1 hr 54 mins

Howard Hawks often said ‘A good movie is three good scenes and no bad scenes’ and this classic noir- mystery is the finest illustration of his theory.

It is also arguably the most enjoyable film that almost no one completely understands. The labyrinthine plot was too confusing for even the writer of the novel on which it was based and Raymond Chandler when questioned about a plot point famously replied “Dammit, I don’t know either!”

No one seems to care. What audiences enjoy even today is the crackling, pulpy fast-paced dialogue, the incomparable chemistry between Bogart and Bacall and the moody Chandlerian world where women are beautiful, duplicitous, always available and more dangerous than the guns the hoodlums carry around like handkerchiefs.
