About the Film
Arriving nearly a decade after `Mon Oncle’, `Play Time’ continues the adventures of Monsieur Hulot. The colorful Paris of ‘Mon Oncle’, last seen being slowly chipped away by progress, has now vanished almost entirely.
Monsieur Hulot has to contact an American official in Paris, but he gets lost in the maze of modern architecture which is filled with the latest technical gadgets. Caught in the tourist invasion, Hulot roams around Paris with a group of American tourists, causing chaos in his usual manner.
Shot in 70mm, `Play Time’ is notable for its enormous set, which Tati had built specially for the film, as well as Tati’s trademark use of subtle, yet complex visual comedy supported by creative sound effects. Dialogue is frequently reduced to the level of background noise.
