Film: Army of Shadows (L'armée des ombres) French with English subtitles

    Directed by: Jean-Pierre Melville

    Duration: 2 hrs 20 mins

    About the Film

Director Jean-Pierre Melville is one of the most influential French directors and `Army of Shadows’ is considered as one of his best works.

Adapted from Joseph Kessel's book of the same name, the story is about the French resistance when the Nazi's occupied France. Even though the story is set during the war, the film is not so much about war. When it was released in 1969, owing to the circumstances, it was not very well received but when it was subsequently re-released later, it went on to become a cult classic. About the film Roger Ebert said, “Rarely has a film shown so truly, that place in the heart, where hope lives with fatalism."
