Sunaparanta presents two films about the Hollywood Movie Industry (The Bad and the Beautiful and The Player) on 12th & 13th February ’19 at the outdoor amphi theatre, presented by Arvind Sivakumaran
“… a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway place where thieves, and pimps run free and good men (and women) die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”
Hunter Thompson’s above statement was about the music business. However, the same can also be applied to the movie business.
These two film highlight, dramatize and illustrate the perils and pitfalls of the brutal Hollywood movie business.
Tuesday, 12th February 2019 – 6.30 pm
Film: The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)
Directed by: Vincente Minneli
Written by: Charles Schnee
Starring: Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Dick Powell, Gloria Grahame
Run Time: 1 hr 58 mins
Kirk Douglas (legendary actor and father of Michael Douglas) gives a career best, Oscar nominated performance as the enigmatic producer who manipulates his way to the top.
Minnelli was better known for his musicals like ‘An American in Paris’ and ‘The Band-Wagon’ but this deeply personal film based on his experiences ranks as one of his best. Winner of 5 Oscars.
Wednesday, 13th February 2019 – 6.30 pm
Film: The Player (1992)
Directed by: Robert Altman
Written by: Michael Tolkien
Starring: Tim Robbins, Great Scacchi, Whoopi Goldberg
Run Time: 2 hrs
Liberally peppered with celebrity cameos, this darkly satiric, suspense film follows Griffin Mill (Robbins) an unscruplous movie executive who is stalked by a disgruntled writer. Altman’s takedown of the powers that make moviemaking decisions seems even more relevant as the years go by.
Winner of Best Director and Actor (Robbins) at the Cannes Film Festival 1992
