The Artistic Peregrinations of Jose Maria Gonsalves by Murali Ranganathan | 13 November 2024

13 Nov 2024 to 13 Nov 2024

Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts and VM Salgaocar Foundation invite you to a lecture by historian, writer and translator, Murali Ranganathan on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, 6.30 pm.

In his lecture, From Piedade to Pakhtunkhwa via Parel: The Artistic Peregrinations of Jose Maria Gonsalves, Murali Ranganathan will trace the emergence of Jose Maria Gonsalves (1800–1845), as a prominent lithographer, through paintings sketched in the 1820s and ‘30s. These scenes from the city, inspired by its denizens, are produced in two albums. They mark the advent of lithography in the city and provide glimpses of Bombay when it was turning into a metropolis of the British empire. Both these albums were published - the first (1826) in black & white and the second (1833) in colour - and were among the first lithographic illustrated books to be printed in the city.

An artist much in demand, Gonsalves travelled extensively in India as part of the ever-expanding colonial project. But his connections with his homeland remained strong till the end. Lost to history soon after his death, Gonsalves emerges as an important print character in the Mumbai Print History project.

The lecture

will be followed by a conversation moderated by journalist Vikram Doctor.
