Growing Up in Mario's World - Celebrating the birth centenary of Mario de Miranda (1926 - 2026)

09 May 2026 to 13 Jun 2026

Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts is pleased to present Growing Up in Mário’s World, marking the birth centenary of one of India’s most beloved cartoonists, Mário de Miranda.

Widely regarded as a seminal visual chronicler of modern India, Miranda developed a distinctive style rooted in wit, keen observation, and social nuance—using humour as a sharp and engaging lens on everyday life.

The exhibition brings together works spanning his career, from early sketches and illustrations created during his time in Europe in the 1950s, to iconic magazine illustrations from the 1960s and 1970s for The Illustrated Weekly of India, Femina, and Filmfare.

Also on view is a rich selection of archival material, including published pages, personal letters to family, friends, and patrons, and other printed ephemera. Together, these trace a shift from intimate, personal narratives to depictions of pre-liberalisation consumer culture in India, while highlighting recurring themes in Miranda’s work—Goan village life, Bombay’s bustling chawls, and everyday urban social spaces. His enduring engagement with Goa remains a constant throughout.

An accompanying anthology of essays, Growing Up with Mário, has been released alongside the exhibition.

The works on display are drawn from the private collection of Shaun Nicholas Lobo.

The exhibition is open to the public until 13 June 2026.
