Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts and The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa present Still / Goa: A Place in its People, an exhibition of photographs by Portuguese photographer Inês Gonsalves, documenting Goa over a decade between 1994 and 2004. Working across documentary photography, reportage and cultural narratives, Gonsalves spent significant periods in Goa, turning her camera towards the rhythms and textures of everyday life. Her photographs capture streets and homes, rituals and landscapes, people and places, offering a vivid portrait of Goa at a time of significant social and cultural change. Moving beyond familiar tourist representations, Gonsalves’ work is attentive to the people and places that shape Goa’s identity. The photographs reveal a landscape where memory, history and daily life intersect, while recording the subtle transitions taking place at the turn of the millennium. Much of this body of work formed the basis of the 2001 publication Goa, História de um Encontro (Goa, A Story of an Encounter), produced in collaboration with Portuguese writer Catarina Portas. Combining photography and text, the book explored Goa’s architecture, traditions and everyday life, while reflecting on the complex traces of Portuguese presence in the region.
