Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts announces the opening of its new show Goa: A Time That Was, an exhibition of photographic works by Ipshita Maitra, Waswo X. Waswo & Dr. Vishvesh Prabhakar Kandolkar.
The show depicts three periods in Goa’s history and becomes the starting point from where perceptions of belonging and identity are questioned and re-negotiated.
Ipshita Maitra chronicles the ethnographic, ancestral, geographic changes in the landscape using photographic methods that are rarely visible today. Waswo X. Waswo brings together two distinct styles – the vintage studio portrait and traditional photo hand colouring – in a personal memoir of his years spent in Goa and a reminiscing of the many travellers frequenting the coastal belt in search of paradise. Dr. Vishvesh Prabhakar Kandolkar, presents his ongoing research into the afterlife of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, one of the few surviving monuments in Old Goa and an emblem of Indo-Portuguese aesthetics.
The works invite a reflection into the cultural identity of a place which is holding on to its past while charting its path for the future.
Goa: A Time That Was opens on Wednesday, 8th September 2021, 10.00 am to 7 pm.
